Romeo und Julia entspricht im Aufbau der Arbeit „Seht euch an“ (s. Skizze 2). Zwei Personen sehen sich über einen Venezianischen Spiegel (Spionspiegel) an. Sie wissen, dass ihnen hinter dem Spiegel jeweils eine Kamera „in die Augen sieht.“
Im Unterschied zu „Seht euch an“ handelt es sich jedoch bei den Personen um Schauspieler, die zusammen schon sehr oft das Stück „Romeo und Julia“ aufgeführt haben. Ihnen wird erst kurz vor der Aufnahme gesagt, dass sie sich unterhalten dürfen. Einzige Einschränkung: Sie sollen nur Sprachmaterial aus dem Stück „Romeo und Julia“ verwenden. Sie dürfen dieses jedoch beliebig variieren, ganz so, als entspräche der Text des Stückes ihrem gesamten Wortschatz.

The setup of „Romeo and Juliet“ is equivalent to that of „Look at each other“ (cf. figure 2). Two people are looking at one another via a semi-transparent/one-way mirror. They are aware of the fact that behind the mirror, a camera is „looking“ each of them „in the eye.“ In contrast to „Look at each other,“ however, the two persons involved are actors who have staged Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” together many times. It is only very shortly before the take begins that they are told that they are allowed to talk, the only constraint being that they are supposed to exclusively use linguistic material from the play “Romeo and Juliet.” They may vary it at will, just as if the text of the play constituted their entire vocabulary.
